I receive quite a few inquiries about logo design – and I only take on ones that I feel I can connect to on a deeper level. I am very ‘old school’ when it comes to logo design and I truly believe that they MUST mean something on a conceptual level – not just look nice. 🙂 After speaking with Martha (Martha Manning Photography) about her current logo – what she was dissatisfied about it, what drives her creatively on a deeper level etc. I let these thoughts stew for a couple days in my subconscious until I had found the connections I was seeking for a successful logo that would mean something to her and yet, not alienate her first logo to not break the tie between the past and future.
I noticed that her current logo had a crescent moon in it, and that her subcategories on her website for her galleries were based on the seasons. She told me that she was inspired by the concepts of cycles, seasons and eternity. I also learned that she loves certain browns and greens. With that I came up with sketches that reflected these ideas with a fluid modern twist. Each sketch incorporated interwoven circles (representing the seasons/nature,) a subtle crescent moon (ode to her first logo,) and even a subtle ‘ring’ theme of bride and groom – one bigger than the other. This is the final approved logo that she fell in love with. I created both a positive and a negative, as well as a horizontal and a vertical format for the logo so that she had choices depending on her use. (i.e. album logo die, or image watermark, etc) The logo variations all had to look equally great as one color and full color.
She sent the most wonderful thank you card – and also posted it on her own blog for her clients to see {scroll down under her adorable new doggie!} Thank you so much Martha for an extremely smooth and enjoyable logo project!! 😀
